If you are looking for an efficient reference management system, then you will definitely want to have a look at JabRef. It is a highly popular piece of software, due to its excellent support for BibTeX and LaTeX. Besides editing BibTeX files, you can also import data from online science databases, manage and search BibTeX files and much more.

The software is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that it is absolutely free. It comes in a small package and it doesn't take long to install its components. There are no special requirements you have to meet and you won't notice any significant impact on your computer's performance.

The general layout of the main user interface is fairly efficient and the controls shouldn't prove to be a challenge for a seasoned user. The largest part of the window is dedicated to managing a database. You can bring up a few search options and other tools in a column, on the left side of the interface.

When it comes to populating a database, the software lets you choose from numerous entry types. References to articles, books, manuals or patents are just a few examples. Regardless of your choice, creating an entry doesn't involve much more than filling in a series of input fields. It is also possible to attach files from local folders, which can be in various formats.

With your database completed, you can choose from various options, on the toolbar or in the top menus, to carry out all sorts of operations. BibTeX keys can be generated instantly, with a single click. Furthermore, the software lets you set set up file links, clean up your database and more.

When it comes to keeping a well maintained references database, JabRef is definitely the solution you should be looking at.
